Lucky Grey

Age: 20
Gender: Gelding

**UPDATE LUCKY GREY HAS BEEN ADOPTED** REHAB COMPLETE :)

Lucky Grey- is one lucky boy!!!! He is an aged (grandpa) 14.3 hand Arabian gelding that I saved him from the New Holland Hell auction, on 6-14-2010 and I am very proud of this save! As you can see from Lucky's rehab pictures, he is a mess upon arrival to Safe Haven Arabians.

The auctioneer said that he got beat up by a stallion, but who knows.... but this arabian gelding did not have a chance, there was only one other person bidding on him... a meat buyer. Probably because he had serious injuries including a kick to the face as pictured. His face, swollen to the size of a volley ball.  He also has a very serious eye infection in both eyes, (as pictured) and cuts, lacerations and blood stains all over him, (as pictured) he is covered in ticks (or was until I picked them all off) Despite all of the neglect; He is as sweet as pie, and very grateful... He didn't deserve to go to slaughter, but no one wanted to deal with his injuries. Poor baby! :(

Paulina's Baby and Mia (her foal)

Age: 7
Gender: Mare

Paulina's story is horrific... Paulina (an OTTB) was dumped at a kill auction 10 months pregnant (with her Appendix foal) by her then owner, who was a well respected Dr. in Fayetteville, Ohio. I guess this person decided he didn't want o breed anymore, so he dumped his trusty brood mare, and never looked back. Paulina was run through the auction and was bought buy a killer. She was then thrown into a kill pen (holding pen to slaughter) The stress of the situation made her foal three weeks early, this mare gave birth to her baby in a kill pen of 30 horses, geldings, stallion and other mares, can you imagine? AMAZINGLY- She was able to fight them all away and keep her baby safe. I should mention that this 16.2 hand Thoroughbred mare was about 500lbs at the time of this exhausting battle for her and her baby's life. The meat buyer who bought Paulina "not knowing" she was pregnant, was very disappointed when he came back to the auction in the morning to load the horses for Canada (to be slaughtered) when he noticed Paulina had a baby at her side, and if he thought she was thin before (while pregnant) well then he REALLY thought she was thin now, therefore she won't bring much bang for the buck at the slaughter plant. This broker then sells her to another meat broker who is in route with a trailer full of horses to New Holland, PA. The day old baby and her barely standing mom Paulina, are loaded up on a full trailer and taken all the way from Ohio to PA. Upon arrival they are thrown into another auction, and even worse one I might add; where luckily with the help of rescues pulling together they were spared and sent to me at Safe Haven Arabians for rehab. Mia, the Appendix Filly has been adopted to good friends and supporters of Safe Haven Arabians, Lynn and Bobby, and Paulina has gone on to join a wonderful and RESPONSIBLE sport horse breeding program at Ellis Supreme Arabians in Idaho Falls, Idaho. This was the hardest rehab yet... when mama arrived she was not producing milk from being so terribly thin.. I had to bottle fee the baby for 6 weeks until mom gained a few pounds and was producing on her own... A lot of patience and love and these two came out stars! :) Here are before and after photos for your viewing pleasure ;)

Patriot

Age: 12
Gender: Gelding

*Patriot* was definitely a rescue case, he was in the "danger zone" price range on craigslist in VA, where I found him. So I bought him (for 200.00) and when he arrived I was horrified. How anyone could starve an animal is beyond me. The previous owner told me they had moved to VA from CA and that Pat just didn't adjust well, she never mentioned him to be starving to death and thin... This boy needed some major rehab before he went to his new home, but never did he look better than he does now with his awesome mum Evie ;) See Pat's progress below. There are pictures of him when he arrived to SHA and photos of him now, in his new home :)

**UPDATE** Pat's rehab was completed and he is home. Thank you Evie for giving this awesome dude a safe haven to call home in IL!!!!

Prince

Age: 13
Gender: Gelding

PRINCE NEEDS A SPONSOR- IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN BEING PRINCE'S HORSE ANGEL PLEASE CONTACT ME! THANK YOU!!!!!

 *The Happy Prince*

Prince has trust issues that run far and wide, he is absolutely terrified of men, and is very nervous in general, he seldom relaxes, it is very obvious that there was substantial abuse in this horses' past. Prince was saved from slaughter at the New Holland auction, by another rescue, and landed safely here when I offered to give him a forever home. The people who owned Prince brought him to the New Holland "killer" auction with the instructions of "Get rid of him, he doesn't do anything, he's stupid" Prince was spared despite their wishes, but then fell apart while he was at his quarantine stable for two months. He contracted strangles, the infectious equine disease, and wasn't able to keep his weight during the battle with strangles. My vet was out immediately and  suggested this horse was less than a week away from a starvation that would've proved fatal. He is a very ill boy, and his vet bills have been absolutely NO FUN! Prince will be in rehab for a LONG LONG LONG time.... Not only for health reasons but his training, and learning to trust again, will take a very long time, and a lot of patience. Prince has been through enough hell in his last 12 years, he is a permanent resident, unless the PERFECT situation falls upon him!

Here are photos of Prince when he arrived, and a week later, then two weeks later....  AND NOW!!!!!!!!! :)
